It was a horrible beginning for the UTV motion picture and Disney were ready to packs after scoring strings of flop at the beginning of the year. Well, the table has certainly changed after a monster hit called “Dangal” and as they say ” All Wells Thats Ends Well”.
The 2016 began with a colossal disaster “Fitoor” starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Katrina Kaif which was directed by Abhishek Kapoor who gave us some memorable films like “Rock On” and “Kai Po Che”. Unfortunately the romantic-drama based on the Charles Dicken’s “Great Expecation” sank without a trace. Promos never caught audience’s eye and film managed to earn just Rs 18 crores with a big-budget of Rs 60 crores. Next in pipeline was Rajkumar Hirani’s production “Sala Khadoos” starring R.Madhavan and the new comer Ritika Singh. Though Madhavan’s performance was appreciated, the film was a disaster at the box office not even managing to cross its budget.
However, there was some respite to UTV and Disney when “Jungle Book” became the highest grossing Hollywood in India raking in Rs 180 crores. But then Ashutosh Gworikar’s “Mohenjodaro” happened where Hritik Roshan charged a fee of Rs 50 crores and the periodic-drama could manage to earn Rs 10 cores more than fee. Though well-attempted, “Mohenjodaro”‘s music and promo were never catchy and on top of it, it clashed with Akshay Kumar’s “Rustom” which created a dent in producer’s pocket. “Mohenjodaro” will one of the biggest disaster of Bollywood carrying a budget of Rs 110 crores.
The last man standing for UTV and Disney was “Dangal” which changed the fate of Indian cinema not just with a supreme quality content but memorable performances by the entire star cast. The wrestling drama went to break “PK”‘s record at the box office to become the highest grossing film Bollywood earning Rs 350 crores in India and still counting. Next big release of UTV and Disney is much awaited Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer “Jagga Jasoos” which looks impressive.
